Learning doesn't take place only in the classroom or on the job. It takes place in the field, on the ground. Literally.

Outdoors in round pens and small arenas horses are teaching men, women and teens from all walks of life lessons that have the potential to change their personal and professional lives. Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning (EFEL), also known as Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL), is an innovative, interactive instructional approach that actively engages horses in facilitating the learning experiences of humans. Research has shown conclusively that horses have the uncanny ability to mirror human emotions - anger, frustration, fear, vulnerability, sadness, grief, anxiety, and even joy and happiness - in the moment. They're emotional barometers. Studying and interpreting a horse's responses to our behavior provides healthy insights into our own intentions and mind-set, enabling us to make adjustments that assure more constructive interactions. The lessons learned during EFEL workshops or individual sessions are then applied to our daily lives.

The Epona Approach™ to EFEL focuses on building participants' emotional intelligence and expanding their self-awareness and leadership skills. Emerging from the therapeutic riding movement in the 1990s in Tucson, AZ, it was developed by Linda Kohanov, well-known lecturer, horse trainer, and author of The Tao Of Equus, Riding Between The Worlds, and Way Of The Horse. Since 2003, an international group of more than 175 individuals - educators, human development professionals, therapists, social workers and medical doctors, among many others - have apprenticed with Linda at her ranch in Arizona to learn and teach the techniques she pioneered.

Based in Baltimore, MD, Equinimity, LLC, was established in 2008 to introduce young people and adults to the exciting new world of personal and professional development opportunities that the Epona Approach™ to EFEL offers. No prior horse experience is necessary, just a willingness to engage in a dynamic new way of thinking and learning.
