Learning doesn't just
take place in the classroom or on the job. It
can take place in the field, on the ground.
Literally.
Outdoors in round pens
and small arenas horses are teaching men, women
and teens from all walks of life, lessons that
have the potential to change their relationships
with co-workers, friends, family members, and
others.
Equine Facilitated Human Development (EFHD),
as it is known, is an interactive instructional
format that actively engages horses in facilitating
the learning experiences of humans. Horses have
the uncanny ability to mirror human emotions
- anger, frustration, fear, vulnerability, sadness,
grief, anxiety, and even joy and happiness -
in the moment. They're emotional barometers.
Studying and interpreting a horse's responses
to our behaviors can provide healthy insights
into our own mind-set, enabling adjustments
to be made that allow for more positive interactions.
The lessons learned during EFHD workshops or
individual sessions are then applied to our
daily lives.
The Epona Approach™ to EFHD focuses
on building participants' emotional intelligence,
and expanding their self-awareness and leadership
skills. Emerging from the therapeutic riding
movement in the 1990s in Tucson, AZ, it was
developed by Linda
Kohanov, well-known lecturer, riding instructor,
and author of The Tao Of Equus, Riding
Between The Worlds, and Way Of The Horse.
Since 2003, an international group of more than
150 individuals - educators, human development
professionals, therapists, social workers, and
medical doctors, to name a few - have apprenticed
with Linda at her ranch south of Tucson to learn
the techniques she pioneered.
Based in Baltimore, MD, Equinimity, LLC,
was established in 2008 to introduce corporate
teams and individuals in the Baltimore metro
area to the exciting new world of professional
and personal development opportunities that
the Epona Approach™ to EFHD offers. No
prior horse experience is necessary, just a
willingness to engage in a dynamic and innovative
new way of learning.
